You may not be able to visit the doc or derm for your skincare needs every day but these products make it a lot easier for you to achieve healthy skin!

While doctor brands are more common these days, it wasn’t the case back in 1989 when dermatologist and trained pharmacist Dr Howard Murad launched his eponymous brand.

In fact, Murad has been said to be the first doctor-fronted skincare brand. It is also said to have established the first medical spa and also pioneered the use of alpha hydroxyl and beta hydroxyl acids.

Today, the brand is known for its three-step system: cleansing, treatment and moisturising. Products are colour coded according to the skin concerns that they address and they are big on antioxidants – Dr Murad himself strongly believes in the skin-healing benefits of pomegranates and goji berries.

And although his brand is now known for products like the Murad Intensive-C Radiance Peel and Murad Retinol Youth Renewal, it has always been about promoting “beauty from within”. What this means: the doctor believes that good skin starts with internal care like a good diet and supplements.

When celebrity doctor Dr Georgia Lee suffered blisters and later hyperpigmentation on her face after a serious allergic reaction, she didn’t turn to tried-and-tested, over-the-counter skincare remedies. Instead the Singapore doctor made a cream for herself which healed her skin.

As a result of her personal experience, she became interested in the world of skincare and decided to develop her own DrGL line. The brand’s mantra? Maximum efficacy with minimum fuss, which is why DrGL products are packaged in minimalist, no-frills dark green bottles. Plus, the formulas are easy to use: think Sun Protection Mist, a sunscreen spray that targets even hard-to-reach areas on the body, Restore Gel Mask that doubles up as a nourishing face moisturiser and a calming leave-on gel mask, and Post Cleanser Step 2, a serum that also gently removes dead cells.

Hygiene is also important for the brand so many of the products come with contamination-proof pump and glass dropper dispensers.

The DrGL stable of brands now includes wellness and body care treatments at DrSpa and scalp treatments at DrHair.

Another homegrown doctor brand is IDS or Innovative Dermatological Solutions, founded by Dr SK Tan, a veteran of 20-plus years who wanted to address common skin concerns like acne, wrinkles, sagging and pigmentation disorders. The brand’s products use its patented Enhance Transcutaneous Delivery System which is said to help active ingredients reach target areas more optimally.

Dr Wu

Veteran dermatologist Dr Wu Ying-Ching is known as the godfather of Taiwan’s beauty industry. He started cosmeceutical brand Dr Wu in 2004 as he wanted to formulate gentle yet effective products that his patients could use daily (and safely) after aesthetic treatments or on sensitive skin.

So you can expect Dr Wu skincare products to be free of additives and alcohol. They are also made with the brand’s exclusive Derma-Cells Renewal Technology which uses mandelic acid as the main ingredient. With this, it is said that Dr Wu products can improve skin tone, texture, firmness and elasticity.

Dr Ci:Labo

For Japanese dermatologist Dr Yoshinori Shirono, good skin means skin that can hold in moisture. In 1998, he launched the brand’s trademark Aqua Collagen Gel. Today this is still one of its bestsellers. Although the product has been reformulated over the years, it is known for restoring skin’s radiance, tone and texture – without the use of parabens, mineral oils, fragrances and colourants.

Dr Ci:Labo is also known for its Skin Equation formula which stresses that beautiful skin is dependent on six factors such as hydration, brightness, firmness, radiance, defence and renewal.
