Understanding Our Skin: Skin Types vs. Skin Concerns

Before you blame your next skincare purchase for your skin issues, know this: you could have been using the wrong skincare all of this time, and that is why it wasn’t working. And how did you end up doing that? You followed the wrong analysis for your skin.

There are two factors to take note of: your skin type, and your skin concerns. Your skin type is partly governed by your DNA. It is what you were born with. Skin concerns are issues that pop up as you age, and with various lifestyle habits.

What is Your Skin Type?

A person’s skin type can change over time and this is dependent on changing moisture levels, oil content, and sensitivity levels in the skin. Factors that affect these changes include hormones, lifestyle habits, medication, aging, and changes in seasons. There are four basic skin types, namely normal, dry, oily and combination (dry and oily).

A fifth skin type is sensitive skin. Sensitive skin can be both a type and a condition. Sensitive skin types exhibit characteristics of dry skin, oily skin or combination skin (so you have combination skin that’s sensitive), and they also experience a great deal of irritation like redness, dry patches, red rashes and itchiness. The degree of sensitivity can be due to genetic disposition (for example, those born with eczema), and can also be heightened by lifestyle factors such as improper skincare usage and emotional stress, making it a skin condition.

For instance, someone born with combination skin with zero sensitivity issues can experience skin irritations if that person is always out in the afternoon sun without sunscreen. Another person experiences hormonal changes, and develops oily skin after puberty or giving birth.

What are Your Skin Concerns?

You should always tackle your skin type before addressing skin concerns. Skin concerns are issues you get on your skin that you would like to eliminate. These are caused by factors such as intrinsic and extrinsic skin aging, lifestyle habits and hormonal changes, and these factors can also exacerbate a skin concern.

Some examples of skin concerns include fine lines, wrinkles, sagging, hyperpigmentation, acne, acne scars, dehydration (not to be confused with dry skin), redness, itchiness, clogged pores, under-eye dark circles, puffiness and eye bags. And you can have one or more of these skin concerns no matter your skin type.

Know Your Skin, Get It Properly Analysed

Instead of buying the latest skincare with rare-this-rare-that ingredients or breakthrough technology, consider your skin type and concerns first. Get it done with a skin-analysing machine or by a doctor to avoid any biased results or errors.

One such skin-analysing service is available at DrSpa®. You can get your skin analysis done at DrSpa® branches located at Palais Renaissance, TQL Suites (Bugis), TANGS and Orchard Gateway. The skin scan, worth $75, is complimentary if you purchase DrGL® products after. Do call ahead to make an appointment to avoid waiting, and to make sure the machine is available for you.
