It removes dead skin cells yet it works gently and has hydrating benefits

The term “chemical peel” may sound scary to some of us, especially if we have sensitive skin. After all, chemical peels, whether performed in a beauty salon or doctor’s office or sold as an over-the-counter skincare product, are formulated with acids and that thought alone is enough to make our skin feel all tingly and stinging. But lactic acid may make you change your mind. Why? It is one of the gentler forms of alpha-hydroxy acids, which are used in skincare for their brightening and anti-ageing effects.

Lactic acid is derived generally from fruits or milk – this is why it is even known as “milk acids” sometimes – but most skincare products now use a synthetic form of it. And because it is mild enough, it is recommended for sensitive skin or those using a chemical peel for the first time.

So, what does lactic acid do for your skin?

Because of its larger molecules, lactic acid tends to sit more on the skin surface than penetrate deep within skin. This way, it is able to slough off dead cells from the skin surface to reveal a clearer, brighter complexion, and reduce the appearance of enlarged pores. When used in a more concentrated form professionally, it can treat hyperpigmentation and age spots. The bonus? Lactic acid is also hydrating on skin, which is a double bonus if you have both sensitive and dehydrated skin but still want a brightening boost.

One product which uses lactic acid is DrGL Post Cleanser Step 2. The brand created this product as a proprietary step in a skincare routine.

This works as a mild chemical peel that exfoliates and hydrates skin, removing dead cell and debris build-up that causes your complexion to look dull and unhealthy. And because it already helps to exfoliate skin, be sure not to use a face scrub at the same time.

It can also help to reduce the look of fine lines and enlarged pores as well as prime your skin for the rest of your skincare products like your serum and moisturiser.

If you are using the Post Cleanser Step 2 for the first time, acclimatise your skin to the product by applying it twice a week after cleansing and toning. You can dab the product onto your face – don’t forget your neck too – with cotton pads. If your skin is oily, you can use the Post Cleanser Step 2 twice daily.

Then follow up with a serum like DrGL Skin Repair or DrGL Collagen Essence.
