How To Tell If Your Skin Is Stressed

One word. Inflammation.

When your immunity system is down, you fall sick more easily. Likewise, a lowered immunity system can cause your skin to show signs of stress and inflammation. It’s really your body’s way of protecting you and telling you that something isn’t quite right.

However, there’s more to what triggers skin stress than just a compromised immunity system.

Skin is, after all, your biggest organ. If you think about it, every part of your body is covered by, well, skin – it acts as the first layer of defence for everything else that makes up you. This also means that your skin is fully exposed and highly vulnerable to external stress factors such as UV rays, pollution, changes in the climate, pollen, a lack of sleep and even just stress from work or family concerns.

One of the most common signs of stressed skin is a change in its colour. For instance, it will become red and rashy, and also itchy or tingly. Or your skin will show a difference in texture. When I have too little sleep, I often see tiny skin-coloured bumps on my face. In extreme cases, inflamed skin will even swell.

For most of us, these signs of skin stress and inflammation will vanish after some time. However, constant skin inflammation can trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation too.

Melanin, which causes pigmentation, actually works as a protector for your skin. It only becomes a bad thing when there’s too much of it – which is when your skin is stressed and melanin over-produces itself to protect you. As a result, permanent dark spots and scar marks may emerge on your face.

If you find your skin reacting badly to sun exposure, pollution, climate changes when you go on holidays and other “stressful” situations, the solution is to use a soothing skincare product.
