3 Common Skin Woes in Your 40s and 50s
3 Common Skin Woes in Your 40s and 50s

Common skin issues in the 40s and 50s and how to fix them

By the time you hit 40, you would have (more or less) settled on the skincare products that work for you; the textures you like, the brands that work better, the ingredients to be wary of, etc. And then, life throws you a curveball. Due to a decline in estrogen, the hormonal changes that occur in our 40s creates gradual but noticeable changes in the skin. On top of that, like any organ in the body, the skin ages, and cell regeneration slows down. Together, these factors lead us to a new set of skin issues in our 40s and 50s.

Drier skin

In your 40s, your skin produces less sebum, starts to feel drier, and your regular face moisturiser can’t seem to do its job anymore. This is time where you need to switch to a richer moisturiser. If you are not keen on a richer moisturiser, you could also invest in deep-hydrating serums to add to your routine to help keep skin hydrated.

Duller Skin

What we mean when we say that cell regeneration slows down is that the skin can’t recover as quickly as before. In other words, if you tend to stay up late, eat irregular meals or stay out in the sun a lot, your skin would have a harder time repairing itself in your 40s and 50s. To help your skin rejuvenate and boost skin radiance, supplement your skincare routine with weekly face masks, face oils (don’t just apply, massage it over your skin), and exfoliators.

Lines, Wrinkles and Sagging

As we approach 40, we reach the perimenopause stage where oestrogen levels can be unstable as they go downhill until we reach menopause, usually in our 50s. Aside from other issues like loss of bone, low oestrogen levels reduce collagen production, resulting in thinner skin, more visible wrinkles and saggy skin. You would need to bring in the big guns: everything you use should be anti-ageing by now – and not the anti-ageing starter products, but more the intense formulas.

Face treatments at this point is no longer a treat. To get skin firmer, smoother and more radiant, book a firming facial once to twice monthly. One such face treatment is the DrSpa® Lift face treatment. Designed to boost skin rejuvenation, this treatment uses radiofrequency waves to stimulate the natural production of collagen to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and to tighten saggy skin. The two-hour, pampering session leaves you looking refreshed, and your complexion more supple and radiant.
