Red patches on skin, dry spots, blemishes, itchy spots, tingly and stinging sensations. Do they sound familiar? Sensitive skin is in, and not in a good way. Even if you don’t have it, you probably know someone that does. Why is it so rampant these days? We did some digging to uncover 5 of the main culprits behind sensitive skin so you know what triggers to look out for.

As usual, we’ve included our handy BFF tips because when it comes to skincare, we never leave you hanging.

1. Travel

Change in location and weather doesn’t just result in change of wardrobe. It can have a negative effect on your skin when you move from one climate to another. Moving between hot and cool climates has no chill for your complexion and can cause major stress for your skin. Like you, your skin needs time to adjust.

BFF tip: Use skincare designed for sensitive skin for a week after you travel as your skin can suffer from jetlag too.

Bring skin back to equilibrium with DrGL® Restore Gel Mask. Packed with healing botanicals, it makes a particularly good travel companion as skin tends to be stressed by changing environments.

2. Products that are too harsh

You may be unknowingly using (or over-using) products that are too harsh for your skin type. Such ingredients can damage the skin’s surface, removing its natural protective oils and leaving it vulnerable to sensitivity. Choosing the right products for your skin can help improve the function of your skin barrier and reduce sensitivity.

BFF tip: Opt for soap and fragrance free formulations as these are common culprits that trigger irritation.

Soothe red, itchy skin with DrGL® Cleanser Sensitive. The gentlest ingredients are used in this soap and fragrance free formula to ensure maximum compatibility with even the most sensitive skin.

3. Environment

Dirt and pollution in your daily environment are unavoidable and can leave your skin feeling irritated. This weakens the skin’s natural barrier, making it more sensitive. These pollutants cling to the skin, aggravating it by blocking pores which trigger sensitive skin conditions.

BFF tip: Remove all traces of remaining impurities without irritation using DrGL® Toner Sensitive to give skin the delicate care it deserves, priming it to achieve optimal results from your moisturiser.

4. Clogging

Insufficient exfoliation can cause your pores to clog. When skin isn’t properly cleansed, your skin barrier function struggles. Even after cleansing, traces of impurities can still be found and that’s where exfoliation steps in to do the heavy lifting.

BFF tip: Complement your daily cleansing with a weekly exfoliation. DrGL® ultra-fine Cleansing Scrub cleans effectively yet gently while polishing, refining and regenerating skin.

5. Diets

Without sufficient nutrients, your skin can become dehydrated and stressed, two factors which trigger skin sensitivity. Skin irritants can also be found in the food we ingest. A healthy diet flushes out toxins and gives you glowing skin.

BFF tip: Maintain a balanced diet and drink plenty of water. Power up on antioxidant foods rich foods like fatty fish and berries and drink sufficient water to help keep the skin hydrated and sustain normal moisture levels.

Take a look at your current skincare and lifestyle practices. With the right skincare solutions, sensitive skin can be managed and the effects minimised to reduce skin sensitivity in the long term. We’ll get you on your way to glowing skin.

Your Beauty BFF
