7 Hair Mistakes You’re Unknowingly Making

7 Hair Mistakes You’re Unknowingly Making

We think we know our hair and what we’re doing to it, but as it turns out, we might be doing damage to our strands with habits we didn’t even realise were bad.

From using the wrong products to using too much or too little, here are 7 common mistakes we’re making that result in us falling short of our hair goals. Are you guilty of any of these? We know we are!

1. Using the wrong products

You could be using the wrong shampoo for your hair. Most people assume that their hair is too oily or dry simply by looking at the strands when they should actually be looking at their scalp. The best way to know is to go for a thorough scalp analysis to properly assess the state of your scalp and strands.

2. Conditioning wrongly

Ensure you choose a conditioner that matches the needs of your strands, not your scalp. Conditioner should be used sparingly – from the mid-length to the ends, where it truly needs hydration. If too much is applied or not washed off properly, it will coat the hair and leave a residue which causes build-up. Just remember that when it comes to conditioning, a little bit goes a long way!

3. Wearing tight hairstyles

Tight, slicked-back hairstyles might look trendy, but they’re really pulling on the hair in a way that causes tension. Ponytails and tight braids lead to repeated stress on the hair and scalp, which can lead to breakage and hair loss, especially if you have the same ‘do every day so remember to switch it up every once in a while.

4. Brushing your hair when wet

Wet hair is much weaker than dry hair, so treat it with care. Brushing wet hair is a common mistake many people are guilty of making. Wet hair is more prone to tangling so brushing when it’s wet makes it more susceptible to breakage and damage. Run your fingers through your hair to separate the locks first before combing and use a wide-toothed comb to work through hair instead of a brush.

5. Towel drying hair

Post-shower, avoid vigorously drying your hair with a towel. Rough towel drying on wet hair can cause damage to the hair follicles. On top of that, rubbing hair causes frizz and breakage, making hair dull and dry. Instead, gently blot hair from the roots to the ends with a towel.

6. Skipping heat protection

Heat is one of the most damaging elements to hair. Always, always, always use a heat-protective aid to shield strands. Heat protectants work by forming a film on the surface of the hair to dissipate heat. Pay attention to the ends, which are the most delicate and tend to get the most abuse. Allow hair to air dry until damp (sectioning your locks to help them dry faster) before blow drying on a warm or cool setting at a distance of 6 inches so that the heat applied is not direct.

7. Protecting your hair from sun damage

Most people don’t realise sun protection for the hair is just as important as it is for the skin. Sun damaged hair loses protein, and becomes dry and brittle. Apart from using haircare with sun protection benefits, whenever possible, wear a hat and use a moisturising hair conditioner.
